< Back to Previous Page Southeast Region Conference And DUI Laws In North Carolina The Southeast Region will conduct its annual Colonel’s Conference on April 26-27 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Colonels’ Conference draws the region’s top law enforcement executives together to formulate their continued commitment to traffic safety with NHTSA and empowers each state highway patrol office to continue its efforts to save lives and reduce injuries associated with motor vehicle crashes in the Southeast Region. The purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for the eight southeastern states’ colonels and their staffs to discuss highway safety issues in their states, and to inform them about the upcoming Click It or Ticket/Safety Belt Mobilization, the Buckle Up In Your Truck campaign, and the Labor Day 2006 Impaired Driving Crackdown. Impaired driving and impaired-related crashes constitute one of the nation’s leading health problems. These events result in more deaths each year than do total homicides, and alcohol is a factor in 35% of all crashes in the United States. The impact is particularly severe among young people, age 15-24, where impaired driving is the leading cause of death. Clearly, impaired driving and impaired-related crashes constitute a major threat to the safety and well-being of the public. Each year in the United States there are 115 million episodes of alcohol-impaired driving. Approximately 17,000 deaths and 513,000 injuries result from impaired driving, costing the public 51 billion dollars.
